Here is where I will post all the resources that have helped me on my investing journey.
My first attempt at investing for myself was through Robinhood. I love Robinhood for a small investor like myself, but when I began trading stocks, I was clueless. I bought some things because my friends told me they were, I bought some stocks because the company seemed like it was in an industry of the future; whatever that meant. I sold stocks because the price started dropping; If you have read or begun to read “The Intelligent Investor” by Benjamin Graham, which I highly recommend, or if anyone ever sat you down and taught you about investing, you will recognize that I was doing exactly what you are not supposed to do.
The Intelligent Investor
After my run of terrible investment decisions, I decided to do some reading and learn to become a better investor. Thinking back on it, I took a personal finance class in college where many of the topics and strategies covered in this book were mentioned. I retained nothing from the class; at the time I had no money and thus no frame of reference for what was being discussed. How do you explain stock valuations to someone such as myself who had no idea where you would even go to buy a stock?
Financial Peace
As you can tell by now, I like books. “Financial Peace” by Dave Ramsey is not primarily a book on investing, but it is a book that describes how I came across money to invest responsibly with. As a child, my parents dragged me along with them to Financial Peace seminars; I carried many of those lessons with me to this day. Its basic tenets are live below your means and avoid high-interest debt. I find the style of the book to be comforting and hopeful, rather than admonishing and scary.
